Chris Born, director of the fire protection department at Clark Nexsen, recently published an article discussing “shadow areas” in the American Fire Protection Association’s publication, Sprinkler Age. Chris points out that while allowances are made for shadow areas in the referenced edition of NFPA 13, not all Authorities Having Jurisdiction (AHJs) share the same interpretation of this code. Demonstrating this variance through stories of three different collegiate student housing projects, his article emphasizes the importance of early communication between the designer, code official, and AHJ to coordinate a successful design and avoid unnecessary increases to timeline and budget.
