Clark Nexsen Remembers Bob Gibson

Clark Nexsen is saddened to hear that former Clark Nexsen leader, Robert C. Gibson, PE, FNSPE, passed away on February 20, 2025. During his 47-year tenure at the firm, he became partner in 1979 and was promoted to President, CEO, and Chairman of the Board in 1985.

“Even though Bob retired many years ago, his impact at Clark Nexsen can still be felt to this day,” said Terri Hall, PE, President. “While his professional and personal accomplishments were numerous and impressive, people truly remember Bob for his character, friendship, and mentorship. He will be sorely missed, not just at our firm, but across our industry.”

In addition to his success at Clark Nexsen, Bob enjoyed tremendous professional achievements during his career. He was named Virginia Engineer of the Year in 1979, was President of the Virginia Society of Professional Engineers, served as President of the National Society of Professional Engineers from 1988-89, was Chairman of the National Institute of Building Sciences from 1991-93, and received the Member of the Year Award by the National Institute of Building Sciences in 1998.

“Bob was an incredible colleague and human being,” said Chad Poultney, PE, LEED AP, Managing Principal. “He was, without question, a people person with a unique ability to engage and connect with others. His professionalism, knowledge, and skills set the standard for leadership at Clark Nexsen, which still echo to this day.”

In honor of Bob’s inspiring leadership during his years guiding the firm, the Clark Nexsen Foundation established two $50,000 scholarships at Virginia Tech in 2008. One scholarship supports students in the School of Engineering, while the other benefits students in the College of Architecture.

“Armed with a southern drawl and charming personality, Bob was a consummate professional and leader,” said Bob Burkholder PE, FACEC, LEED AP, Principal. “He was always willing to reach out and engage with people, such as introducing himself to new employees. He was an incredible colleague and human being, and he will be missed.”

Born on November 6, 1937, Bob grew up in Norfolk, Virginia. After graduating from Granby High School in 1953, he attended Virginia Tech, where he was Corp Commander, served as Judge of the Honor Court, and graduated with a degree in Mechanical Engineering. Bob then joined the U.S. Army and served his country for eight years, including the U.S. Army Reserves. Bob moved to Blacksburg in 2008, where he was President of the Kiwanis Club, whose mission is to serve children of the world, one child, one community at a time. Bob remained dedicated to his alma mater, serving on the Virginia Tech Scholarship Committee and the Engineering Dean’s Advisory Board. He was a member of the Virginia Tech Academy of Engineering Excellence and the Virginia Tech Society of Mechanical Engineers.
